AI Imagery: Can You Trust What You See When You Shop Online?
Posted on Oktober 15 2026
Scroll through any social media feed or online marketplace today and you'll almost certainly see images made by artificial intelligence, whether you realise it or not. Tools that can produce a photo-realistic picture from a few typed words have gone from novelty to everyday use in a remarkably short time. For shoppers, that raises a simple but important question: when you look at a product image, can you trust that it shows what you'll actually receive?

Left: our real product photo of our Children's Sterling Silver Colourful Cupcake Stud Earrings. Right: the same photo digitally enhanced in the way AI tools often “improve” images – brighter colours, added sparkle, a warm glow and a larger-looking product. Same earrings, very different impression.
What is AI imagery?
AI imagery is any picture created or heavily altered by artificial intelligence rather than captured by a camera. The software has learned from millions of existing images and can create new ones that look convincingly real: a model wearing a bracelet, a charm glinting in soft light, a beautifully styled gift box on a marble table. None of them need to exist.
The advantages
AI imagery isn't bad in itself. Used honestly, it has real benefits.
- Creativity and inspiration. It can produce mood boards, seasonal backdrops and lifestyle scenes that help customers imagine how a piece might be worn or gifted.
- Speed and cost. Small businesses can make attractive marketing visuals without the expense of a full photoshoot, which helps independent brands compete with much larger ones.
- Concept development. Designers can try out ideas visually before committing to production.
- Accessibility. It gives people without photography skills or studio equipment a way to communicate visually.
The disadvantages
The same qualities that make AI imagery useful also make it easy to misuse.
- Products that don't exist. Some sellers use AI to create images of items they have never made or held. What arrives can look nothing like the picture, if anything arrives at all.
- Unrealistic detail and finish. AI often makes metal look shinier, stones look clearer and craftsmanship look finer than the real thing. With jewellery, where detail is everything, that gap matters.
- Misleading scale. A charm can look large and substantial in an AI scene when in reality it's far smaller.
- Fake reviews and “customer photos”. AI can also produce convincing images of happy customers wearing products, which makes social proof harder to rely on.
- Erosion of trust. As AI images become harder to tell apart from photographs, shoppers become more sceptical of everything they see. Honest sellers suffer alongside dishonest ones.
Can you trust the image in front of you?
The honest answer is: not automatically. It's increasingly difficult to tell an AI image from a real photograph at a glance, but there are signs worth looking out for:
- Too perfect to be true. Flawless lighting, impossibly smooth surfaces and an unnaturally glossy finish can be warning signs.
- Odd details. Look closely at hands, fingers, clasps, chains and lettering. AI still struggles with fine, repeating detail, so you may spot links that merge together or engraving that doesn't quite read.
- No close-ups or alternative angles. Genuine sellers usually show a product from several angles, often on a plain background. A single dramatic lifestyle shot is less reassuring.
- Missing information. Look for clear dimensions, materials and weight. Vague descriptions alongside polished images should make you pause.
- Prices that seem too good. A beautiful image paired with an unusually low price is a classic red flag.
- Little trace of the business. Check for a proper website, contact details, a returns policy and a history of genuine reviews.
A reverse image search (with Google Lens, for example) can also show whether the same picture is being used by several unrelated sellers – a strong sign the product shown may not be what you'll get.
Why buying from a trusted brand matters
This is where the brand behind the image becomes as important as the image itself. A trusted retailer has a reputation to protect, and that reputation is built on customers receiving exactly what they expected.
At Liberty Charms we believe the picture you see should be the product you receive. That means:
- Real product photography. Our product images show the actual charms and jewellery we sell, so you can judge size, colour and finish with confidence – browse our best sellers and see for yourself.
- Honest descriptions. We give clear details about materials and dimensions, so there are no surprises when your parcel arrives.
- Responsible use of creativity. Where we use styled or creative imagery for inspiration, it's there to set a mood, not to misrepresent what you're buying.
- Accountability. We're a real business with real people behind it. If something isn't right, you can contact us and we'll put it right.
- Customer reviews you can rely on. Our reviews come from genuine customers who have bought and worn our pieces.
Charm jewellery is often bought to mark something meaningful: a milestone birthday, a new arrival, a special friendship or a memory worth keeping. It deserves to be exactly what you chose.
The bottom line
AI imagery is here to stay, and used responsibly it can be a wonderful creative tool. It does, however, mean shoppers need to be a little more discerning than before. Look closely, ask questions, check the details, and above all buy from brands that stand behind what they show you.
